These parasites typically spread when food, water, or hands become contaminated with human waste. Roundworms can reach lengths of 20 to 30 centimeters, whipworms grow to roughly 5 centimeters, and Giardia duodenalis is a tiny single-celled organism responsible for intense diarrhea outbreaks. This finding provides the earliest confirmed record of Giardia duodenalis in Roman Britain.

A Site Known for Remarkable Preservation

Vindolanda stood close to Hadrian's Wall in northern England. Built in the early second century AD, the wall defended the province of Britannia against northern tribes and stayed active until the late fourth century. The fort lies between Carlisle and Corbridge in present-day Northumberland. Hadrian's Wall stretched from the North Sea to the Irish Sea and included regularly spaced forts and towers. It was guarded by infantry, archers, and cavalry recruited from many parts of the Roman Empire.

Vindolanda stands out among archaeological sites because its waterlogged soil preserved organic remains exceptionally well. More than one thousand thin wooden writing tablets have been recovered, offering detailed glimpses into daily routines at the fort, together with over five thousand Roman leather shoes.

How Researchers Studied the Ancient Sewers

The parasite study concentrated on sediment collected from a sewer drain linked to the latrine block of a third-century bath complex. Teams from the universities of Cambridge and Oxford conducted the work, which appeared in the journal Parasitology. Fifty sediment samples were taken along the roughly nine-meter drain that carried waste from a shared latrine into a stream north of the fort. Archaeologists also recovered Roman beads, pottery pieces, and animal bones from the same area. Samples were split between Cambridge and Oxford laboratories, where researchers used microscopes to look for ancient helminth eggs produced by parasitic worms.

Evidence of Worms and Giardia Infection

Approximately 28 percent of the samples contained eggs from roundworm or whipworm, and one sample held traces of both. That sample underwent further testing with an ELISA bio-molecular technique, in which antibodies attach to proteins made by single-celled organisms, confirming the presence of Giardia duodenalis. Researchers also studied sediment from an earlier first-century fort built around 85 CE and abandoned by 91 or 92 CE. Material from a defensive ditch at that site likewise yielded roundworm and whipworm eggs.

How Parasites Affected Roman Soldiers

The three parasites identified could have caused malnutrition and diarrhea among Roman soldiers, according to Dr. Marissa Ledger, who directed the Cambridge part of the study during her PhD at the University of Cambridge Department of Archaeology. Although Roman physicians recognized intestinal worms, they had few effective treatments, so infections and symptoms often continued or grew worse. Chronic cases would have reduced soldiers' fitness for duty. Helminths alone can produce nausea, cramping, and diarrhea. Senior author Dr. Piers Mitchell, an Affiliated Scholar at Cambridge's McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research, noted that Giardia outbreaks posed particular risks. Some soldiers might have suffered severe dehydration during summer episodes linked to contaminated water, with dozens potentially affected at once. Untreated giardiasis can last for weeks, leading to extreme fatigue and weight loss. Mitchell further observed that the fecal-oral parasites found at the site indicate conditions that could also support other intestinal pathogens such as Salmonella and Shigella, raising the chance of additional disease outbreaks.

How Vindolanda Compares to Other Roman Sites

The dominance of fecal-oral parasites at Vindolanda matches patterns seen at other Roman military locations, including Carnuntum in Austria, Valkenburg on the Rhine in the Netherlands, and Bearsden in Scotland. In contrast, major urban centers such as London and York display a broader variety of parasites, including fish and meat tapeworms. Despite the presence of communal latrines and a sewer system, these facilities did not prevent soldiers from transmitting parasites to one another, explained Dr. Patrik Flammer, who processed samples at the University of Oxford.

What Ancient Parasites Reveal About the Past

Studying ancient parasites allows researchers to identify the pathogens that affected earlier populations, observe how infections differed with lifestyle, and track changes across time, stated Prof. Adrian Smith, who oversaw the Oxford laboratory work. Dr. Andrew Birley, CEO of the Vindolanda Charitable Trust and leader of current excavations, emphasized that the results enrich understanding of life on Rome's northern frontier. Ongoing digs at Vindolanda continue to supply fresh evidence about the severe hardships endured by troops stationed nearly two thousand years ago on this northwestern edge of the Roman Empire, challenging earlier assumptions about conditions in a Roman frontier fort and town. The new findings suggest that chronic stomach issues should be added to the list of daily discomforts faced by soldiers guarding the cold, rain-soaked wall, alongside the lice and colds already recorded in historical accounts.
